I just learned something rather major about why we struggle with life.
My 10 year old just came to me and said…I was making oatmeal for my little sister and I spilled 90% of the packet on the floor but you said I should only give her 1 oatmeal packet and since she has 10% in her bowl what should I do….
My immediate response was…what would you want someone to do for you. To which my 10 year old replies…I would want them to give me another oatmeal packet.
Of course that’s the right answer, along with clean up the mess…so I say to my 10 year old…You are 10…you know the right thing to do, you should come to me and say this is the situation and here is my solution do you agree.
At the surface this seems right…at the surface we wouldl say…thats the way to raise an independant child who knows how to think and solve problems. We would figure these are skills that if she develops will help her survive in society and be a productive adult.
Honestly…thats RIGHT but its also the problem…
See we serve a God who says I want you to be like a child and come to me for direction on all your decisions. We serve a God who wants us to wait for Him not figure it all out our way and then ask for His permission to do what we want.
So its right here at 10 years old that we begin to create this difficult reality for ourselves and our kids where to follow God is antithetical to the prevailing conscious thought of our society.
So as a parent…How do I teach my 10 year old?
